This little guy (along with his bear companion) makes a great little gift for you Valentine! This pattern is good for beginners and works up quickly!

Materials:
3.5 mm hook
Yarn (I use cotton yarn, weight 4): light gray, pink
Polyester fiber stuffing
2 9 mm or 10 mm safety eyes. I used 10 mm in the elephant shown in the photos.(Safety eyes are not recommended for small kids, but you may use black embroidery thread to embroider eyes if you prefer).
Stitch marker (to keep track of rows)
Finishing/tapestry needle (to sew parts together, embroider nose, and weave in ends)

This pattern is written in US crochet terms.
I choose to begin by chaining two and then completing 6 sc starting in the 2nd ch from the hook. Of course, you may alternatively do a magic ring if you prefer.
Head and Body:
Stuff as you go. Use gray yarn.
Row 1: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from the hook (6)
R 2: inc. x 6 (12)
R 3: (sc, inc.) x 6 (18)
R 4: (2 sc, inc.) x 6 (24)
R 5: (3 sc, inc.) x 6 (30)

Insert eyes between rows 10 and 11, about 8 stitches apart (about 6 stitches showing, not obscured by eyes). If you are using eyes smaller than 10 mm, you may want to place them slightly closer.

R 2: Starting from 2nd chain from the hook, complete 6 sc back down the ch. In the last loop complete 2 single crochet. On the other side of the ch, complete 6 sc down the ch and 2 sc in the last loop. (16)
The slip stitches you create in rounds 3 and 4 will count as stitches in your final stitch count. In round 4, you will treat the slip stitches as normal stitches and crochet in them, although it will be a bit tight.
R 3: 3 dc inc., sl st in last stitch with a dc inc. you just completed, 2 sc, 3 dc inc, sl st in the last stitch with a dc inc. you just completed, 8 sc (24)

Optional: I like to add one sl st to the beginning of the next round to make it look a bit more even before finishing off. F.o. leave a long tail for sewing. Weave in the loose end from where you began.
Trunk
Very lightly stuff as you go. Don’t stuff the very top of the trunk (near row 11).
R 1: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from the hook (6)

Arm (make 2)

Tail

Heart
Use light pink yarn.
R 1: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from the hook (6)

F.o. and leave a long tail for sewing. Next, make a second piece following these steps, except do not finish off this one. You will continue crocheting by joining to the next round of the first piece.
R 5: As explained above, connect your second piece to your first piece with a single crochet. You want to connect to the first stitch after you finished off (in other words, the first stitch of the new round). Complete 12 sc around the first piece. Next, connect with a single crochet back to the second piece. Complete 12 sc around the 2nd piece. You should have 24 stitches in total. (12 on each piece x 2 = 24). (24)
Lightly stuff the tips of your heart, and continue to slightly stuff as you go for the remainder of the heart. After row 6, you may notice a small hole in the top of your heart (from where you connected the pieces). Use one of your yarn tails to sew this closed.

Below is a close-up of the heart from after I sewed it on.
Assembly
I chose to place my ears near the front of the head, only about three stitches away from the eyes. To sew on the ears, thread your tapestry needle through the end tail of one of your ears. Place your needle beneath one end of the head and pull through ten rows to the other end of the head. On your ear, count ten stitches from where you originally fastened off and thread your needle to the tenth stitch on the ear. In other words, you’re simply matching up 10 stitches on your ear with 10 rows on the head.
Next, sew across the ear alongside the head. In order to prevent ears from flapping too much in front of the face, I folded my ear slightly so that the edge was facing the back. I sewed across the backside keeping it slightly folded this way. Once you're finished, you can bend the ears backwards slightly so that they stick out. Repeat for the other ear.
Next, sew on your trunk evenly between the eyes. I chose to sew mine right below the eyes. Once you’re done, bend the trunk slightly upwards.
Next, sew on legs and arms where desired. Make sure that the legs are a bit closer to the center of your elephant than your arms (about 3 stitches apart). This will be important when you sew on the heart.
Sew the tail on the back.
Use pink yarn to attach the heart to the legs. To do so, run your tapestry needle beneath 3 stitches on one leg and then run your needle beneath 3 stitches of one bottom side of the heart. Wrap around a few times to make sure it is secure. Repeat on the second leg. I stopped here, but if you’d like to make your heart even more secure, you also might sew the heart to the arms and/or chest.
