Crochet Cow Pattern

Thank you so much for trying my pattern! This pattern is the property of Lindsey Peppers. You may not copy or distribute any part of this pattern. Find me at Instagram at @lindsey_crochets and at Facebook.com/Lindseycrochets.

The directions are written for the creation of the smaller black and ivory cow (worsted weight yarn, 2.5 mm hook). To make the cow with blanket yarn, follow the modifications in red text.

Materials:

  • 2.5 mm hook

    • 4 mm hook

  • Cotton Weight 4 Yarn: black, ivory, blush, taupe

    • Premier Chunky Yarn (Weight 6, Super bulky) in appropriate colors

  • 2 7 mm safety eyes

    • 2 10 mm safety eyes

  • Polyester fiber stuffing

  • Stitch marker (to keep track of rows)

  • Finishing/tapestry needle (to sew parts together, embroider nose, and weave in ends)

  • Embroidery thread (or yarn) in black and white, embroidery needle

  • Tacky Glue (I used this to glue the muzzle on. Alternatively, you may sew it on.)

  • Optional: sewing pins (to place together parts before sewing)

Skills:

  • Basic understanding of how to complete amigurumi and follow patterns

  • Working in a spiral

  • Color changing

  • Sewing amigurumi parts together

  • Basic embroidery skills

  • Finishing off (f.o.) and weaving/tucking in ends

  • Chain (ch)

  • Single crochet (sc)

  • Increase (inc.)*

  • Invisible decrease (dec.)**

  • Regular decrease***

  • Crocheting in back loops only (BLO)

  • Crocheting in leftover front loops

  • Slip stitch (sl st)

*An increase is 2 scs in 1 stitch.

** An invisible decrease is completed by following these instructions: 1. Identify the next two stitches you wish to combine into one. 2. Insert your hook into the front loop of the first stitch. 3. Insert your hook into the front loop of the second stitch. You should have 3 loops on your hook. 4. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. 5. Yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops. Complete invisible decreases every time you see “dec.” unless otherwise specified.

*** A regular decrease is completed by following these instructions: 1. Insert your hook beneath the next stitch. 2. Yarn over and pull up a loop. 3. Insert your hook beneath the next stitch. 4. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You should have 3 loops on your hook. 5. Yarn over and pull through all 3 hooks.

Other notes:

  • This pattern is written in US crochet terms.

  • I choose to begin by chaining two and then completing the necessary number of sc starting in the 2nd ch from the hook. Of course, you may alternatively do a magic ring if you prefer.

  • I make the muzzle, horns, and ears first and then glue or sew these pieces on when I’m part way through the head. Alternatively, you may finish the head and then attach these pieces.

  • Use a 2.5 mm hook for all parts if you’re using worsted weight yarn. Use a 4 mm hook for all parts if you’re using blanket yarn.

  • For the blanket yarn version, I weave/tuck in all my ends of each piece. I sew each piece together using similarly colored worsted weight yarn instead, as it is easier and more secure.

Muzzle

Use blush yarn.

R 1: ch 5, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook complete: 3 sc, inc. On the other side complete: 3 sc, inc. (10)

R 2: inc., 2 sc, inc. x 3, 2 sc, inc. x 2 (16)

F.o. and leave a tail a few inches long (longer if you choose to sew the muzzle on, as opposed to gluing it on.)

To even out the muzzle, insert your yarn into your tapestry needle. Skip next stitch (the one that comes right after you finished off). Insert your tapestry needle through the sitch that comes after the skipped stitch and pull through. Next, insert your tapestry needle through the back loop only of your skipped stitch.

(If desired, this technique can be used to even out other parts of the cow as well). If you’re gluing your muzzle on, secure your yarn by tying a knot onto a stitch on the back side of the muzzle and weave in the end. Embroider two small lines for the nostrils and set muzzle aside.

Horn (make 2)

Use taupe yarn.

R 1: ch 2, complete 5 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook (5)

R 2-3 (2 rounds): 5 sc (5)

F.o. and leave a long tail for sewing.

Ear (make 2)

Use black yarn.

R 1: ch 4, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook complete: sc, inc. x 2. On the other side of the chain complete: inc., 2 sc (9)

R 2: BLO 3 sc, inc. x 3, 3 sc (12)

R 3: BLO 4 sc, inc. x 4, 4 sc (16)

F.o. and leave a long tail for sewing.

Next you will use blush yarn to crochet along the leftover front loops of round 1 and 2 for a total of 21 stitches. After you attach yarn onto your hook, insert hook into the final remaining front loop of round 3. Your hook should be pointed inward, towards the center of the ear. Create a slip stitch on this loop, followed by a single crochet on each remaining loop all the way around, working in a spiral. When you’re finished, f.o. And weave in the beginning and ending tails.

Head

Start with ivory yarn. From rounds 2-12, black text indicates ivory yarn while blue text indicates black yarn.

Insert safety eyes in between rounds 14-15, 10 stitches apart. Glue (or sew) muzzle in between eyes on rounds 11-15. Embroider eyebrows on round 13. Sew ears onto rounds 7-9 (sew the side of each ear along 3 rounds of the head). Sew horns onto round 5.

R 18: (3 sc, dec.) x 8 (32)

Stuff the head so far and continue to stuff as you go.

R 19: (2 sc, dec.) x 8 (24)

R 20: BLO (sc, dec.*) x 8 (16)

*This can be a regular decrease (if it’s too difficult to complete decreases on back loops only.)

R 21: dec. x 8 (8)

F.o. and tuck in the ending tail.

Body:

Start with ivory yarn. From rounds 6-16, blue text indicates a color change to black yarn.

R 15: 11 sc, 5 sc, 14 sc (30)

R 16: (3 sc, dec.) x 2, 2 sc, sc, dec., (3 sc, dec.) x 3 (24)

R 17: 24 sc (24)

F.o. and leave a long tail for sewing.

Stuff the body. The side with the spots is the front of the body. Use the tail to sew the body on the left over front loops on round 19 of the head.

Front Leg (make 2)

Start with black yarn. Stuff only the hoof (rounds 1-4).

R 1: ch 2, complete 5 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook (5)

R 2: inc. x 5 (10)

R 3: BLO 10 sc (10)

R 4: 10 sc (10)

Change to ivory yarn.

R 5: BLO (3 sc, dec.*) x 2 (8)

*These can be normal decreases.

R 6-12 (7 rounds): 8 sc (8)

R 13: ch 1, fold leg in half and crochet together with 4 sc (4)

F.o. and leave a long tail for sewing.

Bottom Leg (make 2)

Start with black yarn. Stuff only the hoof (rounds 1-4).

R 1: ch 2, complete 5 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook (5)

R 2: inc. x 5 (10)

R 3: BLO 10 sc (10)

R 4: 10 sc (10)

Change to ivory yarn.

R 5: BLO (3 sc, dec.*) x 2 (8)

*These can be normal decreases.

R 6-9 (4 rounds): 8 sc (8)

R 10: ch 1, fold leg in half and crochet together with 4 sc (4)

F.o. and leave a long tail for sewing.

Position the legs onto the body in a way that allows the cow to sit without being propped up, if possible. (Use pins first if necessary.) I sewed the front legs onto rounds 14-16 on the body. Additionally, I sewed a couple of stitches between rounds 3-4 of the leg in between rounds 7 and 8 of the body, with each hoof meeting in the middle of the body. I sewed the bottom legs onto rounds 6-8 of the body.

Tail

Start with black yarn.

R 1: ch 2, complete 6 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook (6)

R 2: 6 sc (6)

Change to ivory yarn.
