Reginald the Octopus Pattern

Thank you so much for trying my pattern! This pattern is the property of Lindsey Peppers. You may not copy or distribute any part of this pattern. Find me at Instagram at @lindsey_crochets and at Facebook.com/Lindseycrochets.

Materials:

  • 2.5 mm hook, 3.5 mm hook, and a 1.75 mm hook

  • Cotton weight 4 (worsted weight) yarn: red, ivory, black

  • Weight 2 yarn: black, gold

  • 2 12 mm safety eyes

  • Polyester fiber stuffing

  • Stitch marker (to keep track of rounds)

  • Finishing/tapestry needle (to sew parts together and weave in ends)

  • Tacky Glue

  • Small piece of cardboard (to place on the inside of the top hat).

  • Optional: sewing pins (to place together parts before sewing)

Skills:

  • Basic understanding of how to complete amigurumi and follow patterns

  • Working in a spiral

  • Crocheting in distinct rounds

  • Crocheting on both sides of a chain

  • Sewing amigurumi parts together

  • Finishing off (f.o.) and weaving/tucking in ends

  • Chain (ch)

  • Single crochet (sc)

  • Increase (inc.)*

  • Invisible decrease (dec.)**

  • Regular decrease

  • Crocheting in back loops only and front loops only (BLO, FLO)

  • Slip stitch (sl st)

*An increase is 2 scs in 1 stitch.

** An invisible decrease is completed by following these instructions: 1. Identify the next two stitches you wish to combine into one. 2. Insert your hook into the front loop of the first stitch. 3. Insert your hook into the front loop of the second stitch. You should have 3 loops on your hook. 4. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. 5. Yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops. Complete invisible decreases every time you see “dec.” unless otherwise specified.

This pattern is written in US crochet terms.

Body

Begin with a 2.5 mm hook and worsted weight red yarn.

R 1: ch 5, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook complete: 3 sc, inc. On the other side of the ch complete: 3 sc, inc. (10)

R 2: inc. x 10 (20)

R 3: (sc, inc.) x 10 (30)

R 4: (2 sc, inc.) x 10 (40)

R 5: (4 sc, inc.) x 8 (48)

R 6-19 (14 rounds): 48 sc (48)

R 20: (10 sc, dec.) x 2, (2 sc, dec.) x 6 (40)

R 21: 40 sc (40)

R 22: (9 sc, dec.) x 2, (sc, dec.) x 6 (32)

R 23: 32 sc (32)

When facing the octopus’s front (face), the tail should fall to your left. Insert safety eyes in between rounds 17 and 18, about 10 stitches apart.

Change to a 3.5 mm hook.

R 24: FLO (3 sc, inc.) x 8 (40)

R 25: FLO 40 sc (40)

R 26: 40 sc (40)

R 27: Crochet loosely. Ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sl st in the next stitch) x 8, sl stitch to the first sc of this round you made (40)

F.o. and weave in the end.

Bottom

Use a 2.5 mm hook and worsted weight ivory yarn.

R 1: ch 2, complete 8 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook (8)

R 2: inc. x 8 (16)

R 3: (sc, inc) x 8 (24)

R 4: (2 sc, inc.) x 8 (32)

F.o. and leave a long tail for sewing. Stuff the octopus and sew the bottom onto the leftover back loops of round 23 (the inner most circle of leftover back loops.)

Ivory Tentacle Half

Use a 2.5 mm hook and worsted weight ivory yarn. Complete all slip stitches loosely. Complete 8 times.

R 1: ch 13, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook complete: sl st in the next stitch, 3 sc, 3 hdc, 3 dc, sc, inc. On the other side of the chain complete: inc., sc, 3 dc, 3 hdc, 3 sc, sl st in the next stitch. (26)

F.o. and weave in ends.

Red Tentacle Half

Use a 2.5 mm hook and worsted weight red yarn. Complete all slip stitches loosely. Complete 8 times.

R 1: ch 13, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook complete: sl st in the next stitch, 3 sc, 3 hdc, 3 dc, sc, inc. On the other side of the chain complete: inc, sc, 3 dc, 3 hdc, 3 sc, sl st in the next stitch. (26)

In round 2, you will crochet both the ivory and red tentacles together and crocheting both layers to the left over back loops of round 24 of the body. 4 stitches of each tentacle align with 4 back loops. Notice there are 40 leftover back loops, but you will only end up needing to crochet onto 32 of them. In other words, you will not be using all the back loops to crochet on your tentacles and need to space them out evenly. If you want to space your tentacles out precisely evenly, there should be 1 leftover back loop in between each tentacle. Alternatively, you can just eyeball it as you crochet each tentacle on (because sometimes it’s best to gauge the best place to attach amigurumi pieces together as you go to achieve your desired look).

I weaved my beginning tail in approximately half way through round 2.

R 2: Take both pieces and hold them together so that their corresponding stitches match. Ch 1 and complete 11 sc through stitches on both pieces, crocheting them together. Next, complete 4 sc through both pieces and 4 corresponding back loops from round 24 of the body. Complete 11 sc throughout stitches on both pieces of the tentacle. Complete a sl st through the first sc of the round you made. (26)

F.o. and weave in remaining ends.

Glue down the webbed part of the body to the tentacles. I did this by applying a little glue to the webbed part that corresponded with each tentacles, and pinning it as shown below until the glue dried.

Hat

Use a 2.5 mm hook and black worsted weight yarn.

R 1: ch 2, complete 7 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook (7)

R 2: inc. x 7 (14)

R 3: (sc, inc.) x 7 (21)

R 4: (2 sc, inc.) x 7 (28)

Take your hat so far and trace it onto a piece of cardboard. Cut out the cardboard circle.

R 5: BLO 28 sc (28)

Glue the cardboard circle onto rounds 1-4 of the hat.

R 6-13 (8 rounds): 28 sc (28)

R 14: FLO (3 sc, inc.) x 7 (35)

R 15: (4 sc, inc.) x 7 (42)

R 16: (5 sc, inc.) x 7 (49)

F.o. and leave a long tail for sewing. Sew the tail to the left over back loops of round 13. If desired, lightly stuff the hat and sew it onto the head.

Monocle

Black part

Use 1.75 mm hook and weight 2 black yarn.

If you do not have weight 2 yarn, you can split your worsted weight yarn and use half of a strand. This is what I did for the black part of the monocle and the mustache for the turquoise octopus!

R 1: ch 16. Check to see if this will be a good fit around the eye and either chain more or take away chains as necessary. Sl st to the first ch to complete a loop.

F.o. and weave in ends.

Gold chain

Use a 1.75 mm hook and weight 2 gold yarn.

R 1: ch 6 (or as many as desired) and sl st to the black part of your monocle.

F.o. and weave in ends.

Glue the black part of the monocle around one eye of the octopus. Glue part of the gold chain as well if necessary.

Mustache

Use 1.75 mm hook and weight 2 black yarn.

Right Piece (meaning it will be on the right side of the octopus’s face when you later attach it)

R 1: ch 6, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook complete: (sl st in the next stitch) x 2, sc, hdc, ch 1, sl st in the next st

F.o. and weave in ends.

Left Piece

R 1: ch 6, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook complete: sl st in the next st, ch 1, hdc, sc, (sl st in the next stitch) x 2

F.o. and weave in ends.

Glue each piece of the mustache onto rounds 18 and 19 of the octopus’ face. The part of each piece that has 2 consecutive slip stitches are meant to be the curling ends of the mustache (but feel free to modify based on what looks best!)
