Fox and Wolf Pattern

Updated: Nov 19, 2023

Thank you so much for trying my pattern! This pattern is the property of Lindsey Peppers. You may not copy or distribute any part of this pattern. Find me at Instagram at @lindsey_crochets and at Facebook.com/Lindseycrochets.

This pattern is written for a worsted fox. Modifications for the blanket yarn version will be in red text. (Tip: For the blanket yarn version, it might be easier to weave in the tail of each part and sew parts together with similarly-colored worsted weight yarn. This is because sometimes blanket yarn is very delicate and can fall apart when sewing).

Materials:

  • 2.5 mm hook/4 mm hook

  • Cotton Weight 4 Yarn: black, ivory, gray or orangesuper bulky yarn (weight 6) in same colors

  • 2 8 mm safety eyes/2 14 mm safety eyes

  • 1 9 mm safety nose/1 15 mm nose

  • Polyester fiber stuffing

  • Stitch marker (to keep track of rows)

  • Finishing/tapestry needle (to sew parts together, embroider nose, and weave in ends)

  • Embroidery thread (or yarn) in black and white, embroidery needle

  • Optional: sewing pins (to place together parts before sewing)

Skills:

  • Basic understanding of how to complete amigurumi and follow patterns

  • Crocheting in a spiral

  • Crocheting in distinct rounds

  • Color changing

  • Sewing amigurumi parts together

  • Basic embroidery skills

  • Finishing off (f.o.) and weaving/tucking in ends

  • Chain (ch)

  • Single crochet (sc)

  • Increase (inc.)*

  • Invisible decrease (dec.)**

  • Regular decrease***

  • Crocheting in back loops only (BLO)

  • Slip stitch (sl st)

*An increase is 2 scs in 1 stitch.

** An invisible decrease is completed by following these instructions: 1. Identify the next two stitches you wish to combine into one. 2. Insert your hook into the front loop of the first stitch. 3. Insert your hook into the front loop of the second stitch. You should have 3 loops on your hook. 4. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. 5. Yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops. Complete invisible decreases every time you see “dec.” unless otherwise specified.

*** A regular decrease is completed by following these instructions: 1. Insert your hook beneath the next stitch. 2. Yarn over and pull up a loop. 3. Insert your hook beneath the next stitch. 4. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You should have 3 loops on your hook. 5. Yarn over and pull through all 3 hooks.

Other notes:

  • This pattern is written in US crochet terms.

  • The patterns for the fox and wolf are identical (except for the color changes).

  • I choose to begin by chaining two and then completing the necessary number of sc starting in the 2nd ch from the hook. Of course, you may alternatively do a magic ring if you prefer.

  • I make the muzzle first so that I can position the eyes properly and sew it on the head before the head is finished. Alternatively, you may sew the muzzle onto the completed head.

  • For both 1. sewing the muzzle to the face, and 2. sewing the body to the head, I used orange yarn to sew the orange parts together and white yarn to sew the white parts together.

Muzzle

Begin with ivory yarn. For rounds 2-6, green text indicates a color change to orange (fox) or gray (wolf)yarn.

This will be crocheted in distinct rounds, with a ch 1 at the beginning of each round and a sl st to the first stitch of the round at the end of each round.

R 1: ch 2, complete 5 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, sl st to the first stitch of the round (5)

R 2: ch 1, inc. x 2, inc. x 2, inc., sl st to the first stitch of the round (10)

R 3: ch 1, 4 sc, 4 sc, 2 sc, sl st to the first stitch of the round (10)

R 4: ch 1, (sc, inc.) x 2, (sc, inc.) x 2, (sc, inc.), sl st to the first stitch of the round (15)

R 5: ch 1, 6 sc, 6 sc, 3 sc, sl st to the first stitch of the round (15)

R 6: ch 1, (2 sc, inc.) x 2, (2 sc, inc.) x 2, 2 sc, inc., sl st to the first stitch of the round (15)

F.o. and leave a long tail for sewing.

Insert safety nose in between rounds 1 and 2 of the muzzle, on the top half (where the ivory part meets the orange or gray part). Embroider a black line from the bottom of the nose through the end (round 6) of the muzzle. Stuff the muzzle and set aside.

Head

Begin with orange (fox) or gray (wolf) yarn. For rounds 12-16, blue text indicates a color change to ivory yarn.

R 1: ch 8, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook complete 6 sc, inc. On the other side of the chain complete 6 sc, inc. (16)

R 2: (sc, inc.) x 8 (24)

R 3: (2 sc, inc.) x 8 (32)

R 4: (3 sc, inc.) x 8 (40)

R 5: (4 sc, inc.) x 8 (48)

R 6-11 (6 rounds): 48 sc (48)

R 12: inc. x 5, 14 sc, inc. x 5, 24 sc (58)

R 13-14 (2 rounds): 34 sc, 24 sc (58)

R 15: dec. x 5, 14 sc*, dec. x 5, (sc, dec.) x 8 (40)

*Optional: Put a stitch marker on the 7th and 8th stitches to mark the middle of the face. This will help you with eye placement later.

R 16: (sc, dec) x 8, (2 sc, dec.) x 4 (28

Insert safety eyes in between rounds 12 and 13 right next to either side of the muzzle, about 11 stitches apart.

Sew the muzzle onto rounds 11-15 of the face (after the muzzle is sewn about half-way on, I continue to stuff it as I sew.) Embroider eyebrows onto round 11.

Stuff the head so far and continue to stuff as you go.

The remainder of the head can be in either ivory or orange/gray as this part will not show on the finished product. (I continued in gray for the wolf and orange for the fox).

R 17: BLO (2 sc, dec.*) x 7 (21)

*These can be regular decreases (if those are easier than completing invisible decreases along the back loops only.)

R 18: (sc, dec.) x 7 (14)

R 19: dec. x 7 (7)

F.o. and weave in the end tail.

Body

Begin with orange (fox) or gray (wolf) yarn. For rounds 6-14, blue text indicates ivory yarn.

R 1: ch 2, complete 7 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook (7)

R 2: inc. x 7 (14)

R 3: (sc, inc.) x 7 (21)

R 4: (2 sc, inc.) x 7 (28)

R 5: (3 sc, inc. ) x 7 (35)

R 6: 13 sc, 9 sc, 13 sc (35)

R 7-9 (3 rounds): 12 sc, 11 sc, 12 sc (35)

R 10: 5 sc, dec., 5 sc, dec., 5 sc, dec., 2 sc, 3 sc, dec., 5 sc, dec. (30)

R 11-13 (3 rounds): 11 sc, 9 sc, 10 sc (30)

R 14: 11 sc, 2 sc, dec., 5 sc, 8 sc, dec. (28)

F.o. and leave a long tail for sewing. Use the tail to sew the body onto the leftover front loops of round 17 of the head.

Ear

Begin with black yarn. Do not stuff.

This will be crocheted in distinct rounds, with a ch 1 at the beginning of each round and a sl st to the first stitch of the round at the end of each round.

R 1: ch 2, complete 4 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, sl st to the first stitch of the round (4)

R 2: ch 1, (sc, inc.) x 2, sl st to the first stitch of the round (6)

Change to orange (fox) or gray (wolf) yarn. For the remainder of the ear, black text indicates orange or gray yarn while blue text indicates ivory yarn.

Pay attention to increases immediately followed (no comma) by a set of brackets containing 1 sc in one color followed by 1 sc in a different color. This indicates the first sc in the increase is a different color than the second sc in the increase. For instance, in round 3, “ *inc. [1 sc, 1 sc]* ” means that the first sc in the increase is in orange yarn, while the second sc in the increase is in ivory yarn. (I put asterisks around these sections to make them stand out).Rounds 3, 4, and 7 each contain an increase where each sc is in a different color.

R 3: ch 1, 2 sc, *inc. [1 sc, 1 sc]*, sc, sc, inc., sl st to the first stitch of the round (8)

R 4: ch 1, sc, inc., sc, inc., sc, *inc. [1 sc, 1 sc]*, sc, inc., sl st to the first stitch of the round (12)

R 5: ch 1, 3 sc, 5 sc, 4 sc, sl st to the first stitch of the round (12)

R 6: ch 1, 3 sc, inc., 3 sc, inc., 3 sc, inc., sl st to the first stitch of the round (15)

R 7: ch 1, 4 sc, inc., 4 sc, *inc. [1 sc, 1 sc]*, 4 sc, inc., sl st to the first stitch of the round (18)

R 8: ch 1, 4 sc, 7 sc, 7 sc, sl st to the first stitch of the round (18)

F.o. and leave a long tail for sewing. Position and then sew 1(using pins at first, if necessary) each ear onto approximately rounds 3-8, of the head, so that they are bent at a forward-facing angle.

Front Leg (make 2)

Begin with black (fox) or black (wolf) yarn. Stuff only the hoof (rounds 1-4).

R 1: ch 2, complete 5 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook (5)

R 2: inc. x 5 (10)

R 3: BLO 10 sc (10)

R 4: 10 sc (10)

Change to orange (fox) or gray (wolf) yarn.

R 5: BLO (3 sc, dec.*) x 2 (8)

*These can be normal decreases if it is too difficult to complete an invisible decrease on the back loops only

R 6-10 (5 rounds): 8 sc (8)

R 11: ch 1, fold leg in half and crochet together with 4 sc (4)

F.o. and leave a long tail for sewing. (Set legs aside for now.)

Bottom Leg (make 2)

Begin with black (fox) or white (wolf) yarn. Stuff only the hoof (rounds 1-4).

R 1: ch 2, complete 5 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook (5)

R 2: inc. x 5 (10)

R 3: BLO 10 sc (10)

R 4: 10 sc (10)

Change to orange (fox) or gray (wolf) yarn.

R 5: BLO (3 sc, dec.*) x 2 (8)

*These can be normal decreases.

R 6-9 (4 rounds): 8 sc (8)

R 10: ch 1, fold leg in half and crochet together with 4 sc (4)

F.o. and leave a long tail for sewing.

Position all 4 legs onto the body in a way that allows the fox or wolf to sit. (Use pins first if necessary). I sewed the front legs onto rounds 12-14 on the body. Additionally, I sewed a couple of stitches between rounds 3 and 4 of each front leg in between rounds 7 and 8 near the middle of the body. I sewed the bottom legs onto rounds 5-7 of the body and sewed several rounds onto the body to achieve security and proper positioning.

Tail

Begin with ivory (fox) or black (wolf).

Stuff the ivory or black tip (about rounds 1-5) of the tail. Do not stuff the remainder of the tail.

R 1: ch 2, complete 4 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook (4)

R 2: (sc, inc.) x 2 (6)

R 3: inc. x 6 (12)

R 4-5 (2 rounds): 12 sc (12)

Change to orange (fox) or gray (wolf) yarn.

R 6: BLO (4 sc, dec.*) x 2 (10)

*These can be regular decreases.

R 7-14 (8 rounds): 10 sc (10)

R 15: ch 1, fold tail in half and crochet closed with 5 sc (5).

F.o. and leave a long tail for sewing.

Use the end tail to sew the tail onto rounds 4-7 of the back of the body. Sew several rounds of the tail curving along the back so that it shows when your fox or wolf is facing forward.
